Did you know that kids need a minimum of 5 fruits and veggies every day? Are you too busy or do you find it overwhelming trying to keep track? The Today I Ate a Rainbow kit makes it fun and easy!
Busy mom Kia Robertson once faced the same problem, and has turned her solution into a popular and successful product!

Each Today I Ate a Rainbow kit includes:
When Kia approached me about reviewing the Today I Ate A Rainbow! kit, I was excited about it. While my son isn’t the pickiest eater, we definitely have a crazy schedule that sometimes makes it difficult to keep track of his food intake. The kit seemed like a great solution and I was eager to get started with it.
My son was eager too, apparently. Maybe a little too eager.
If you’ve read any of my past reviews, you know I am pretty thorough and like to take lots of detailed photos. This review is going to be an exception and I will instead use the stock photos sent to me by Kia. Why? Unfortunately I never had a chance to take photos of my kit!!
Literally as soon as it was out of the mailer, my little man had ripped it open and immediately started excitedly popping all of the brightly coloured magnetic shapes out of their casings. Picture me frantically picking them all up off the floor, simultaneously trying to stop him from doing any damage to the kit that I had been hoping to get some great photos of. Yeah. Not at all the little photo shoot I had planned.
I eventually rescued all of the other items from destructo boy’s grasp and let him put the magnets on the fridge beside the chart, giggling at his enthusiasm. He was more than willing to get started, so we did!
It was super easy- just place the chart on your fridge (if you have a stainless steel fridge, check the Today I Ate A Rainbow website for tips on other ways to display your chart) and add a corresponding magnet to each colour coded food group that your child eats throughout the day. As the day goes on, you can see which food groups are still needed to make sure he or she has eaten a “rainbow”, which makes it easy to fill in the blanks.
When they eat all 5 colour groups, add an achievement magnet to the rainbow at the top of the chart to celebrate! My son found this to be a fun little game and loved going to the fridge to check his chart after each meal or snack, and now it’s part of our daily routine.
For the shopper in the house, the handy little shopping list also makes it easy to make sure you’re getting enough of the rainbow foods to take home. I forgot mine a couple of times and always ended up missing something- going by memory was definitely more challenging and I found the list to be helpful.
The Rainbow Bunch book has been read over and over, both at mealtimes and at bedtime and makes a cute addition to the kit. My son is only three, but the book helped him better understand why it’s so important to be eating a variety of healthy foods every day. He loved the cute characters and the fact that the story has a happy ending. And so does ours- not only does he want to eat a rainbow every day, he is actually excited to be doing it!
