Mother's Day is Every Day!
At the risk of sounding pretentious, I am truly a fortunate woman. Fortunate in many ways, most of which I owe to motherhood.
I cherish being a mother. Even though as I wrote this, my son was climbing my leg, begging to see the Elmo webpage…again. And even though it has taken me three days to post it- between searching for a sadly missed hockey puck (which ended up being in the pantry) and several potty training incidents. Not to mention dealing with newfound monster phobias, mall tantrums and a mild tummy bug. I still feel incredibly fortunate.
Being a relatively “new” mother, I have a long way to go and a lot to learn. But I have had some great teachers- mainly three very special women- all of whom I call “Mom” :
- My biological mom, who has been by my side to help with Devan literally from the time I started pushing. She came daily when he was a newborn to help in any way she could and gave emotional support on my down days. Even now that I’m back to work, she continues to be here almost daily, giving Devan fantastic care and me peace of mind in not having to worry about him while I’m gone. She even does my laundry, claiming that it’s because she “needs something to do” when my son is napping.
- My Stepmom- who is ever-generous, incredibly thoughtful and loving. She always has (and does) put my best interests ahead of her own, including being not only civil, but outwardly friendly with my mom and stepfather during family events. I know that must be difficult and awkward at times, but she never shows it. It takes a lot of class to be so wonderful and she means the world to me. That, and she’s darned fun to shop with!
- My Mother In Law- who was recently celebrated by her co-workers at her retirement party for being the “glue that holds everyone together”, which she also is at home. She is the reason I stay quiet when my girlfriends complain about their own mother in laws. She’s the reason I have no qualms spending time at her house. And she’s the reason there’s a pumpkin pie (my favourite) on the table at Thanksgiving, in addition to the apple one (which everyone else prefers). And, yes, she is the glue that holds us together.
Being a mother is a gift that we not only receive, but one that is also a joy to share. And one that we need to celebrate more than one day a year. If you are a mom, I hope you truly enjoy your special day- and every day! Moms deserve to be celebrated all the time!
