The following article was submitted by Christine Bond, Avery’s mother.
Avery had heart surgery at SickKids Hospital when she was 13 days old. She was delivered at Guelph, and everything seemed normal until about a week after she was born. Her feet seemed cold all the time and then they changed to purple and her breathing seemed to change. A trip to the pediatrician sent us to McMaster Hospital for an echocardiogram and they admitted her, as she was diagnosed as having a Coarctation of the Aorta (narrowing of the main aortic valve). Very little blood was getting to the lower half of her body. She was transferred the next day to SickKids Hospital and the following day she underwent open heart surgery. She recovered really well and was discharged from the hospital 2 weeks later, but unfortunately had to come home wth a feeding tube in her nose due to vocal chord damage ( one of the surgery risks). She had to be feed through the tube around the clock every three hours.
Avery is almost 1 year old (March 13/2010) and we are celebrating her 1st year after surgery by holding a charity event for SickKids Hospital called “Avery’s Bravery Race”. A 2km walk & 5 km run at Rockwood Conservation in Rockwood ON will take place on April 24/2010 at 9:30am. Online registration can be done at www.runningroom.com . The walk is $15 (family rate of 5 people is $50) and the run is $25.00. The walk includes admission into the Conservation, race kit and a lapel pin. The run includes admission into the Conservation, race kit and a long-sleeved race shirt. All proceeds will benefit the SickKids cardiac unit and Bravery Bead program.
We are still looking for volunteers and if interested, please contact us at
