Get Out of the Way

By K.C. Bateman

I have been a single parent of a little boy since he was 7 months old. There have been many challenges and lessons learned over the last 5 years. As I sit here and watch how easily he plays with kids he has never met before, I am reminded of one of the more recent lessons. I have observed this repeatedly over the last 6 months or so, since my son turned 5.

I have learned to stay out of his way.

Now it hasn’t always been this way. It has been and continues to be a gradual process of giving him the independence to let him be him. I don’t ignore him or neglect him. In fact, I still make a considerable effort to anticipate his needs for food, activities, routine, sleep etc. However when we are in the moment and he is with other children, playing happily, I usually just stay out of his way. He respects others and plays well with them. If I try to get involved he sometimes even tells me to go away. In these moments I am tremendously proud of him.

With all the talk about Helicopter parenting these days…I can honestly say I am not one. My son is thriving and his level of awesomeness is extremely high!
